Fast Facts

  • Since Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything released, Steve has visited just under 300 schools across the country, 80 in the Chicago area alone, where he toured four times in the 2013-2014 school year. He has a waiting list for Autumn 2014.
  • 286 schools = over 70,000 students in grades 3-6. Really.
  • Steve’s main character, Cheesie, regularly breaks the fourth wall in his narratives, often encouraging the reader to follow this or that inquisitive tangent at CheesieMack.com, where there are over 120 interactive pages devoted to extending the Cheesie Mack experience. Many are stealthily educational. All are fun (if the nearly 13,000 comments are any indication).
  • Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything has sold over 25,000 copies in hardback (!) without benefit of being carried on the shelves in Barnes&Noble. (← Yes, there is a story behind this.)
  • Cheesie is 11 (Maybe Steve is 11, too. It’s hard to tell). Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything was released March 2011
  • Steve is the former chairman of the Summer Science Program, arguably one of the longest-lived and most prestigious high-school level academic science enrichment programs in the world. He’s also an alum (class of ’60). So is his son (class of ’98).
  • One of Steve’s many daughters is New York Times #1 Bestselling author Julia Quinn. Two of his other daughters sang back-up vocals on his 2001 children’s album. One of his ten grandchildren embarked upon translating Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything into Spanish when she was eight years old.

TEACHERS & LIBRARIANS:

Your presentation was funny, interesting and engaging, which is more than enough all on its own. But I thank you for taking the time to teach your listeners, as well… Your talk fell right before we began our interpretive essay writing unit on character, and we have referred almost daily to your discussion about Cheesie and Georgie. We can’t wait to read more of your books, and the time you spent at our school will continue to have a positive impact on our teaching and our students’ learning.
